WORKSHOP SPECIFIC INFORMATION
=============================

Workshop Applied For*: SS-E: Scalable Internet Services

Reason for Track Choice*
------------------------
I need this training to complement my already acquired knowledge and technical know-how in the field of Information Technology. We are just about to start the deployment of scalable internet services in the Ministry of Secondary Education (MINESEC)-internal mail service, hosting of websites, building of servers for the treatment of administrative documents and this will be done on the bases of open source software(OSS)or free software that the government have just adopted its deployment in Cameroon in public administration and E-Government.
     I have done CISCO IT Essentials I & II, WLANFE, CCNA, System and Network Administration so I need to complement all of these with Track SS-E where in Cameroon there is lack in this area.

TECHNICAL SKILLS
================

Unix User?*:                              true

How much have you used it?
--------------------------
 I started using UNIX during my training on IT Essentials II-NOS in 2008. Since then I have installed it in Networks and on PCs. In fact I found it wonderful since I did not know there was another interesting OS as such. Even during the Track SA-E we did at LABTIC Polytechnic Yaounde, we volunteered and built up and administered the Network that was used during the training using FreeBSD.

Have you been a UNIX admin?*: true

Describe your experience (length of time, versions, etc.)
---------------------------------------------------------
I have been administrating UNIX System since I got into contact with UNIX in 2008 though not intensive.I have worked with Linux Enterprise 7.2, Ubuntu 8.04, Fedora 5.0, centOS. I furher gained more knowledge during Track SA-E Training at LABTIC Polytechnic Yaounde.

Have you used/administered TCP/IP nets?*: true

Describe
---------
Since my training as CCNA and WLANFE, I have built, configured and administered TCP/IP Networks. In the office we do administered TCP/IP Networks many times for conference purposes, other training needs and connecting offices to the main network.

Have you set up and/or administered any of the following? Please give details

Bind or any other Nameservers*
------------------------------
I just came across it during Track SA-E Training. I have not yet had a good mastering of it. This also explains my motivation for this Workshop especially Track SS-E.

Mail Transport Agents (ex. Sendmail, Exim, Postfix, Qmail)*
-----------------------------------------------------------
I just came across it during Track SA-E Training where we were introduced to Exim. I have not yet had a good mastering of it though I have been using Sendmail, Outlook. This also explains my motivation for this Workshop especially Track SS-E.

Mailing List Managers (e.g. Majordomo or other list manager)*
-------------------------------------------------------------
Not applicable

Web Systems/Servers (e.g. Apache, IIS or other web server)*
------------------------------------------------------------
I just came across it during Track SA-E Training where we were introduced to APACHE. I have not yet had a good mastering of it though I had used it during my training in IT Essentials II. This also explains my motivation for this Workshop especially Track SS-E.

Have you configured or otherwise managed any of the following? Please give details.

Routers*
--------
Yes I have configured Routers since my CCNA: CCNA2 Training up to now that we do configure and manage Routers in the Ministry.

Switches*
---------
Yes I have configured Routers since my CCNA: CCNA3: LAN Switching and Wireless Training up to now that we do configure and manage Switches in the Ministry.

ROLE IN NATIONAL NETWORKING ACTIVITIES
======================================

A description of your current employer, your position, your duties and
responsibilities, and how they relate to current and future data
networking activities in your country*
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I was employed as a high school science teacher but I underwent a lot of training in the IT field that I was moved to IT department of the Ministry of secondary Education. In this Ministry, there is a lot of lack in this field and more so there is a lot resistance despite the fact the government is trying public administration. As an IT technician and Teacher, I take part in the deployment of IT resources, training of personnel in the area, building and administering networks for public administration, seminars. Now that the government has a master plan on the development of IT, linking of ministries to their regional offices, e-government, creation of telecentres and research centres in schools which will be based on the OSS, it is necessary I start arming myself. In fact the private sector is not well developped in Cameroon due to lack of power, in the near future it will be developed and it will need a lot of experts in this area. IT industry is still a virgin in Cameroon
 and we need more training to further train others here on the spot to take up these challenges which I think ties with one of the objectives of AFNOG and Cameroonian Association of Linux and free software(known by its french acronym AC3L). The country has its plan in the IT field to
. connect strategic directorates like Customs, Treasury to the Ministry of Finances
.connect the central and external services of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs;
. interconnect universities, schools both secondary and primary schools
.put in place the internet exchange point among other projects. This requires a huge man power that is why as an individual I should be preparing toward these goals.

A brief description of your computing and networking environment (operating systems,
networking software, modems, etc.), including the connectivity of your organization
to the Internet and your country's connectivity to the international Internet*
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We mostly work in the Microsoft environment like MS Windows XP, Windows 2000, MS Outlook. Of recent we have moved to Ubuntu and Linux but with much resistance from the users. Our servers run on Linux. Our connections are mostly ADSL, wireless, fibre optics that link our ministry to the National Backbone. This national backbone covering 3 200 km for the first phase will cover the whole country linking all the divisional headquarters to major towns. Cameroon is part of SAT-3/WASC or South Atlantic 3/West Africa Submarine Cable linking Portugal and Spain to South Africa, with connections to several West African countries along the route with a landing point at Douala-Cameroon.

Scope of your institution (check all categories that apply)*

Other: Ministerial Department

Approximate number of full time staff at your institution*

How your training and current work prepare and qualify you for the track you wish to attend*
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First of all with my knowledge in the IT Essentials I & II, CCNA, WLANFE and more so I did already Track SA-E which is leading point toward Track SS-E where I will more knowledge and go further into internet services. In fact, there is a serious lack in this area of scalable internet services in Cameroon which I think banks need them even presently and they hold the future.

How you expect to use the knowledge you gain at the workshop after you return to your country*
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Given that the country is still a virgin in this area the knowledge gained shall be very useful. First and foremost in the ministry where I work my input will improved. I will also the knowledge to teach others and do on the job training when we will be working. I will also be able to purpose my services to banks and big organizations in the deployment of the OSS and scalable internet services which I have not ever done so because I was lacking in the area of these internet services. I will just fit into the government plan of e-government, modernizing public administration, automatic file treatment and transfer by internet, and even e-voting that the country is looking forward for the 2011 presidential elections.

If you have previously attended AfNOG or INET Workshops for Developing Countries
Year and track you attended
---------------------------
SA-E

A precise description of how you have used the training you have received in the past
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After the training we have changed and installed UNIX system unbuntu, FreeBSD and trained some users to use it. They are beginning to enjoy its stability.

The significant advances in networking which have occurred in your country specifically
because of your knowledge and effort
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This has finally caused and convinced the administrators that using OSS is more advantageous than licensed software and they are looking forward to the politics of training in this area. That is I see that it will be necessary I do the training privately since their will take a long time before they will decide to train during which time I might instead be one of the trainers.

FINANCIAL INFORMATION
======================

Are you are requesting financial aid from the AfNOG Workshop for attending the
workshop and meetings, or for travel costs?*
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Requested aid to cover travel expenses.

Explain why you are asking for financial assistance. How will your
organisation and your country benefit from your training? What other
sources of funding have you approached, and what were the results?
-------------------------------------------------------------------
THis is because I am attending this Workshop private since I know its importance but the my ministerial department has not yet it importance and so it can not support. So, I am trying to raise the money alone. It is pretty high for me. My country will surely benefit much since they cannot see the importance now it is necessary so that they will see from my output, effectiveness and improved services that I will offer on my return. This will convince them perhaps for future meetings as such. I have also sought for funding from the National Agency for Information Technology and Communication(ANTIC) but they say there was no budget line for this area. I thought I should not sit but try as an individual since I see the importance for myself and also to contribute in one way for my country. It might even lead me to create employment to others someday.

If you are requesting financial support for travel expenses, please provide
